波赫士Jorge Luis Borges(1899-1986)一八九九年出生於阿根廷首都布宜諾斯艾利斯。在日內瓦接受正式的中學教育,青少年時期遍遊歐洲各國。除了西班牙語,尚精通英語、德語、法語與拉丁語....。 自稱「自修學者」,一部《大英百科全書》塑造了他的閱讀品味,「將現實當做一種神秘的知識」,並「以書評方式展開小說敘述」,儼然勾勒著通往異境花園的迷宮地圖。 其「圖書館員」生涯﹝曾任阿根廷國立圖書館館長﹞及百科全書式寫作,恰恰反映在他實驗性作品中的簡潔與豐繁。 相形於他的世界聲譽,波赫士一生顯得平淡而坎坷;而長年的失明又讓他的書寫洞見澄透。他不僅延續了西班牙文學的優秀傳統,又帶動拉丁美洲文學的世界風潮。當二十世紀文學窮盡了所有可能性之後,波赫士無疑開啟了下一個窗口。
