本书是一部有关汉字正音的专门字典，篇幅中等规模，在汉语词典系列中尚不多见。其特点有二：1.在注音、辨音上不嫌其详，对多音字各音的源流、误音的原由、正音的依据都有详尽介绍；2.依据传统的右文说，全书编排基本上依汉字声旁把所收录的14200个单字、字头和部件共组分成1120个部件组，这在汉语词典中也不多见，多为作者的研究所得。
