○忽视术后感染早期症状,导致患者瘫痪;
○患者术后情况良好,却遭受脑卒中及失语,原因未明;
○两次重大手术,未能挽救11岁女孩;
○实习医生出错,剪断患者神经;

- "As a practical brain surgeon I have alwyas found the philosophy of the so-called 'Mind-Brain Problem' confusing and ultimately a waste of time. It has never seemed a problem ot me, only a source of awe, amazement and profound surprise that my consciousness, my very sense of self, the self which feel"
- "All the skills that I slowly and painfully acquired to become an aneurysm surgeon have been rendered obsolete by technological change. Instead of open surgery, a catheter and wire is passed through a needle in the patient's groin into the femoral artery and fed upwards into the aneurysm by a radiolo"
- "My assistants are all as susceptible to the siren call of aneurysms as I am. They long to operate on them, but the fact that most aneurysms are now coiled rather than clipped means that it is no longer possible to train them properly and I can only give them the simplest and easiest parts of the occ"
- "Doctors like to talk of the 'art and science' of medicine. I have always found this rather pretentious, and prefer to see what I do as a practical craft. Clipping aneurysms is a skill, and one that takes years to learn. Even when the aneurysm is exposed and ready to take a clip, after the thrill of "
- "I left the room. Years ago, I would have stormed off in a rage, demanding that something should be done, but my anger has come to be replaced by fatalistic despair as I have been forced to recognize my complete impotence."
- "The patients and their families become unrealistic and start to think that they can go on being treated forever, that the end will never come, that death can be forever postponed. They cling to life. I told the meeting about a similar problem some years ago of a three-year-old child, an only child f"
- "Dying is rarely easy easy whatever we might wish to think. ... You don't just speak a few meaningful last words to your tearful family and then breathe your last. If you don't die violently, choking or coughing, or in a coma, you must gradually be worn away, the flesh shrivelling off your bones, you"
