原來不完全是醫學史。藉由研究煙草，一方面討論近代早期中國如何進入全球化的世界裡，另一方面討論消費文化在過去五百年的延續性。寫的相當好。像這樣找一個明確的主題，然後把其中複雜的方方面面都融成一本書，3或許是個好的取徑。

非常扎实的研究。关于gender (Chapters 3 &9) 和 medicine (Chapter 4) 的部分都写得很好。
its interconnected history illustrates how tobacco, as commodity, became a hallmark of modern mass consumerism. it thus join global histories of fashion and consumption from the 16th century. this book also shed light on the factors that have shaped china's highly gendered tobacco cultures.
For the history of an object, she fails to address the material aspects of the object. The consumption of manufactured/hand-made cigarettes was accompanied by changes in production and distribution of tobacco, where are not sufficiently discussed by Benedict. As a cultural history, it does not show the normative process of symbolic meaning making.
很好的阐述了continuity的问题，但是问的问题not interesting，好多重复，a little dehistoricized and much depoliticized
