《世界百科全书》(The World Book Encyclopedia)是世界著名的以青少年读者和图书馆为服务对象的百科全书。该书由美国World Book图书公司于1917年开始出版,以后逐年增删修订,成为美国家庭常备、全球销量第一的百科全书。 1917年前,《世界百科全书》还是些多卷本的学术著作,存放在布满灰尘的学术图书馆里,不是为一般大众设计的。后来编辑将学者们撰写出的词条,核查可靠的资料,然后认真将它们改写成各个年龄阶段的读者主要是中小学生都能看得懂的著作——《世界百科全书》。可以说全球有3800多名专家和学者参与这一跨时代、跨国界的浩大工程。《世界百科全书》自问世以来,已多次增订改版。享有盛誉的百科全书评论家和权威人士Kenneth F.Kister在其《最佳百科全书》一书中提到52部百科全书。他认为《世界百科全书》是一部杰作,值得注意的是它的易读性和实用性,它的广泛而平衡的内容、精确和新颖的条目以及令人赏心悦目的插图和排版。 因为是《世界百科全书》国际版,而中国又是世界上一个大国,因此关于中国的内容应该大体上跟西方的一些主要国家的条目基本平衡。比方《世界百科全书》很多的小城镇都能够作为一个条目出现,而中国的每个省以及每个省的省会城市都不是一个条目,这显然不对称,因此我们在整个原有中国条目的基础上增加了330个中国条目。中国的每一个省、每一个省会城市都是独立条目。当然还有一些其他的调整。
