柯南道尔,1859年生于苏格兰,1885年在爱丁堡大学获医学博士学位,1902年因为对英国的南非战争政策辩护有功而封爵。他受母亲的熏陶,从小爱讲故事,在学校里是有名的故事大王。由于受侦探小说家美国的爱伦•坡(Edgar Allan Poe, 1809-1849)、英国的科林斯(Wilkie Collins, 1824-1889)和法国的加博利约(Emile Gaboriau,1832-1873)的影响,在开业行医的业余时间创作侦探小说。1886年,他以大学里一位具有惊人的观察和推理能力的教授为原型,塑造了一个私家侦探的形象,这侦探取名叫Sherlock Holmes(歇洛克•福尔摩斯),并借助其副手Dr.Watson(华生医生)讲述破案过程的结构形式,完成了第一部福尔摩斯探案小说《血字的研究》。起初投稿无人欣赏,至次年才由《比登圣诞年刊》勉强刊登发表。不过,有一家叫《利平科特》的杂志却看好他,于1890年登出了他的第二部福尔摩斯探案小说《四签名》。1891年,曾扶植过萧伯纳、克里斯蒂等多名作家的《海滨杂志》(The Strand Magazine)注意到了柯南道尔的福尔摩斯探案小说,以50英镑的优厚稿酬,发表了他的《波希米亚丑闻》(以后高至每篇100英镑)。从此柯南道尔和他笔下的福尔摩斯一起蜚声文坛。这一年,柯南道尔弃医从文,专门写福尔摩斯探案小说。
