老海的中长篇总让我觉得他是在把一个短篇成比例放大。但虽然如此，这一本的确带给我质地相当于其短篇杰作的体验。我暂时没找到很好的给它扣星的理由——就算本来有，看到结局时也没有了。
除了中间几页的意识流，算得上page turner 了。阅读体验不错，轻松愉快。
巨细靡遗的对话和内心独白的写法，来回切换的人称叙事，感觉更像剧本了。革命浪漫主义，结尾看哭得稀里哗啦。最出彩的两章是游击队清洗右翼和死神之味。西班牙内战好像左毒在人类历史的一个缩影，海明威和奥威尔都看得很清楚
最後一章是篇极棒的短篇。
一战永别了武器中写出了“生不如死”，二战丧钟里写出了“向死而生”，“you are instruments to do your duty”，那我宁愿希望每个人都是一座孤岛 | 海明威的长篇总是要读了50%+篇幅之后才能进入状态
