首先，本书的翻译真是毁了一本书，这本书的英文原版也许比中文版好很多，这种科普向书籍麻烦找个至少学过理论力学，材料力学，结构力学的人来翻译吧，很多名词至少要和约定俗成的内容一致吧，看书过程中真的是让我自我怀疑。其次，这本书的内容已经是四十年前完成的，有一些前沿的内容已经过时，用这样的内容进行科普，很容易迷惑很多读者，而且作者作为一个船舶结构工程师的视角来看其他结构，很多观点有失偏颇，比如分析建筑结构中桁架的作用时，他忽视了桁架的非抗震属性。最后，这本书的最后一章的强行对大工业时代的美学进行批判，怀念前工业时代的精致生活，请别忘了那个时代的少部分人的精致是建立在大部分人被残酷压榨，劳动成果被残酷掠夺之上的。本书也许是一本对结构外行的很不错的入门书籍，但对我来说根本算不上好书。
是物理力学最好的读物。动物，建筑等等都在结构力学的支撑下生存。用结构去理解世界真让我海阔天空。
以前本科读书时候略显枯燥的力学和桥梁工程课，被这本书形象地串起来了。
好看，结构、材料、工程都讲了，硬度和刚度的区别什么的，拉应力和推应力，感觉应该是高中物理啊
我为甚么要看这个。。。不就是不带算例的结构力学。。。
可惜翻译与配图不好 影响理解
前三章觉得水，后面裂缝的能量切入角度让我耳目一新，读的兴致勃勃，再往后就有点愈发看不懂了；不过依旧兴趣盎然。不仅仅只是阐述建筑结构，还涉及到交通工具、生物，视野开阔令人叹为观止。值得多读的。
直到看到格里菲斯理论，从能量释放角度对于裂缝的介绍，才觉得有意思了起来。和我平时接触的设计是确实很不一样。
翻译不流畅，疙疙瘩瘩的，内容整体上有些高开低走，好在最后一章翘尾。倒是关于自然之美，作者切入的角度有那么点意思：人们神往的大自然之美某种程度上是人工改造后的美，原始的野性大自然可能会令很多人望而生畏和却步
其实还挺有趣的，举了很多例子，不过对于过于专业的部分因为完全没有基础基本上是一知半解迷迷糊糊地读的，感觉很多都没有懂。不过一些关于生物结构啊、桥梁啊、古老建筑和船舶等等简单地知识还是又学到一些很表皮的东西，感觉还是有所收获
