[美]迪伊·布朗(Dee Brown),曾长期担任伊利诺伊大学香槟分校的图书馆管理员,他发表的有关美国西部和美国内战的著作,总计有二十五部之多。已于2002年去世。 邓海平,律师,北京大学法学学士及硕士,美国佐治亚大学法学硕士(LLM)。译有《九月的十三天》《奠基者:独立战争那一代》《美国独立战争简史》。

副标题“美国西部印第安人史”,其实应该是“印第安人眼中的美国西部史”,尽管就出版而言略显拗口。因为本书大量使用印第安人留下的有限文献资料(口述),呈现了一部不同于所谓“文明”与“野蛮”遭遇的故事,在他们那里,美国总统是“上父”,军官是“酋长”,他们用自己的概念来理解、消化、应对美国人的现实与政治,特别是西进,却终究不敌信口开河、欺诈成性、暴虐至极的美国白人。毫不夸张地说,一部美国西进史,就是一部印第安人的血泪史,更是一部美国国内殖民主义史。本书的意义,兴许就在于让失语者发声,让事件本身自陈。
诚如作者所言“这并不是一本令人愉快的书,但历史总有方法影响当下”。 所谓“美国西拓史”,在“部分美国人”看来(如果他们还认可自己是美国人的话),是一部美洲原生文明消亡史,是万千印第安人东向抗争史。在抵御屠杀中,他们失去了土地牲畜、亲友袍泽,天神地祇,甚至于对人的基本信任。 在凛冽肃杀的南北军阵外,每一位被标记的酋长都在期待着,能于白人上帝眼前安然逃回祖地,即使遍布异族,坟茔中可堪酣睡。 可惜,上帝从未如是想!
