很全面。与其说这本书是一部大乘仏教教义诸层面的入门，倒不如说它是一本伪装成导论的大乘仏教西文研究综述（上世纪初至2007年），从绪论中有关大乘起源的争论便可见一斑——作者将平川、Schopen、Ray、Nattier和Boucher等学者的观点一一列出并评介。由于作者本人是做印度和藏传中观派哲学出身的，对于别的领域，像是瑜伽行派，需要大量参考Schmithausen等专门家的研究成果；对于汉文或日文材料，也完全依赖于西文翻译。这导致作者有时未能甄别这些研究里存在的致命问题，将其保留在了本书中。比较明显的一个例子是，在“瑜伽行派”一章中，作者沿用了Lindtner 1985对Kambala的断代，认为他活跃于5到6世纪初（实际上，Kambala大概是8、9世纪人），并以此为基础展开了讨论。
