  • "Beauty is thus, according to Alberti, a harmony inherent in the building, a harmony which, as he subsequently explains, does not result from personal fancy, but from objective reasoning.""
  • "Thus Alberti demands, logically, the straight entablature above the column, and declares that arches should be carried by 'columnae quadrangulae,' i.e. pillars."
  • "A cloister runs around the little courtyard Its spacious arches resting on round pillars Whose height is equal to the pavement's width; Their thickness is their height by eight divided. Each column has a silver capital Whose height repeats the measure of its thickness, Whereas the shaft stands on a "

masterful reading of architectural structure (though a bit biased towards that of plans and facades, and short on the experiential side of things), and a lucid companion piece on architectural proportion to Panofsky's 1921 paper.
