Eva Hoffman was born in Krakow, Poland, and emigrated to America in her teens. She is the author of Lost in Translation, Exit Into History, Shtetl, The Secret, and After Such Knowledge. She is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Whiting Award, and an award from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. Hoffman lives in London.

Loved her style. And I could relate to so many of her experiences/feelings.
尤其喜欢前半段的童年见闻,从一代移民的视角来看,其观察尤其细腻,对新语言的拿捏体会细致入微,经历过一定文化切换的人一定会有所共鸣(有趣的是可能让大家熟悉的不只是语言的部分,后面的返乡部分描述的波兰,也让人感觉特别“中国”)。缺点:中后段作者彻底沉浸在了自己对于语言和周遭生活的感受之中(文字难度至少对我陡然增加),通篇的我的观感就是“I don't care”

讲一个女孩的家庭从波兰移民到加拿大,后来又搬到美国。语言很美,情感细腻。书名之所以叫lost in translation我想是因为语言的转换改变了女孩的自我身份,象征着移民者的艰辛与迷惘。

自行翻译的一段:“只要我周围的世界每次都是新的,它就没有成为我的世界;我咬紧牙关生存,去抵御每一次陌生事物的袭击……只有在你可以理解的环境中,刺激才会转化为经验,行动才会拥有目的,一张脸庞才会显得亲近,一个人方能被认识。这些模式构成了意义的土壤。但这显然是移民、流亡和’极端流动性’(Extreme mobility)的危险,因为你从那片意义的土壤中,被连根拔起。”
My uni is my America but I have no Poland. Not enough..not enough. Catch up, keep up. Beautifully written. Time slows down for her, once again, finally.
第一本认真读完的memoir,写作风格非常细腻,和Mary Antin的互文很有意思。
