比尔▪阿迪斯是英国剑桥大学工程历史教授，著名工程师。他在英国雷丁大学担任教职15年，并获得工程历史和工程哲学的博士学位。他出版了大量关于建筑方面的教材以及建筑工程学历史方面的书籍，并发表了大量书评。除本书外，他还著有《结构工程的艺术》（The Art of the Structural Engineer）、《再生及回收材料在建筑中的使用：回收及再生材料建筑设计手册》（Building with Reclaimed Components and Materials: A Design Handbook for Reuse and Recycling）、《创新与创造：结构工程设计师对设计的贡献》（Creativity and Innovation: The Structural Engineer's Contribution to Design）、《哈博尔德：建筑的信心》（Happold：The Confidence to Build）等。
