我们从小到大惯听的口号「不自由毋宁死」，其实对于大多数庸众，幸福和自由从来都不是同义词甚至没有很强的正相关。至于那些虚矫的追求与所谓更深层次的自我实现，西方自由主义说这是人人皆有的高贵平等的品质，共产主义说我们总有一天可以化小我为大我的一部分，而李光耀说，其实大多数普通人都不太需要那个叫做灵魂与思想的东西，让他们在世俗的框架内规矩过好世俗的一辈子就好了，更高深的问题留给一小部分知识分子自娱自乐就够了。

The English in this book is so different but so familiar, and his way of seeing the growing China reflected in the people he made doing business with China during 2020s. There are a few things that bothered me about Singapore before, and this book clarified all. I was so dumb to read it now but so lucky that I read it.
