书籍介绍

This completely revised and expanded edition of English Prepositions Explained (EPE), originally published in 1998, covers approximately 100 simple, compound, and phrasal English prepositions of space and time – with the focus being on short prepositions such as at, by, in, and on. Its target readership includes teachers of ESOL, pre-service translators and interpreters, undergraduates in English linguistics programs, studious advanced learners and users of English, and anyone who is inquisitive about the English language. The overall aim is to explain how and why meaning changes when one preposition is swapped for another in the same context. While retaining most of the structure of the original, this edition says more about more prepositions. It includes many more figures – virtually all new. The exposition draws on recent research, and is substantially founded on evidence from digitalized corpora, including frequency data. EPE gives information and insights that will not be found in dictionaries and grammar handbooks.

  • "9.2.3 A variation from the basic meaning: Keep from …-ing In expressions such as stop from and keep from, the meaning of from is particularly interesting. For example, at first sight it may be difficult to see how from in (75) and (76) can mean, ⭕→. (75) I keep away from the dog just in case what sh"
  • "(24) a. Three unidentified persons…robbed him of his money. …… The history of of in these constructions is particularly complex: of appears to be a rendition into Middle English of the Old English genitive of privation."
  • "But, in addition to the general points already made, it may help to remember that perfective UP rarely collocates with multi-syllabic, Latinate verbs (e.g. ×nationalize up the industries)."
  • "Take care OF sb: Here, care (~ ‘worry’) was a bad thing, and so if somebody had it, and you took it, you were being kind."

喜欢这本排版
读着比较有意思,但也就是有意思...
Following the thesis of Boers, the writer's main goal is to list the literal and figurative meanings of english prepositions, to the exception of how each of them form a radial category of its own. Good introductory text. Not comprehensive enough for research. Anyway, the references are helpful!
amazing
看完豁然开朗的感觉!!!
少一星是因为作者会写应该再写点。。。
形象且系统
对高频介词的使用场景及细微区别进行了详尽描述,配有插图,生动形象地描绘出介词的空间含义及关系。
确实很详尽了,解答了我很多关于介词的疑问。
