美国国家地理学会，创建于1888年，是世界上最大的非赢利性科学和教育组织之一。学会拥有4本子刊（《国家地理·旅行家》、《国家地理·探险》、《国家地理·孩子》和《国家地理·探险家》）和32个海外版本，全球发行量达1000多万册，其中的370万册是美国本土外发行的，220万册是英语以外的其他语言出版的。

1888年10月，美国国家地理协会会刊--《国家地理》杂志第一刊出版。杂志以“增进和普及地理知识”为宗旨，1000万册的期发量位居第四，在全美“杂志300强”排行榜上始终居于前列。除本土英文版外，《国家地理》杂志还出版近二十种语言版本。2000年，《国家地理》杂志以其全方位的优秀运作荣获业界最负盛名的国家期刊奖。
