  • "The White Fleet itself, after visiting New Zealand, Australia, Japan, and China, was to leave Manila early in December. Had Nimitz joined it, as he suspected he might be ordered to do, he would have encountered many of his Annapolisfriends, including Ensign Bill Halsey. But the White Fleet was not du"
  • "On the desk also was a framed photo of General MacArthur, ... .To a friend Nimitz once confided that he kept the picture on his desk merely to remind himself not "to make Jovian pronouncements complete with thunderbolts.""
  • "(Admiral Ghormley) He was found to have been suffering from abscessed teeth, possibly the main cause of his shortcomings as ComSoPac. With all his teeth drawn, he was in excellent health."
  • "... If that didn't work, and the visitor deserved special consideration, Nimitz would lead him into the chief of staff's office and turn him over to Spruance. In this office few visitors lingered long, for it contained no chairs. Spruance rarely sat during the daytime and did all his paper work from"
  • "The outing consisted mainly of a hike along the beach in bathing trunks - two miles, according to Admiral Spruance, who always went, five miles according to the recollections of the more tenderfooted officers - followed by a swim. Mell A. ("Pete") Peterson, then a commander, recalls grimly the resul"
  • "... but Nimitz always returned to Makalapa Sunday morning and was in his office by 10:00 am, because, beginning at that time, and hour of classical music was beamed out from San Francisco. One could always tell which officers had especially pleased him during the week; Nimitz would plug them in on t"
  • "Though Admiral Nimitz and Spruance thought alike, particularly in the matter of strategy, their personalities were decidedly different. Spruance was no less warmhearted than Nimiz, but he found it difficult to communicate with people. Mell Peterson called him "prim", and some junior officers referre"
