William Somerset Maugham nWilliam Somerset Maugham (25 January 1874-16 December 1965) was a British playwright, novelist and short story writer. He was among the most popular writers of his era and reputedly the highest paid author during the 1930s. nAfter losing both his parents by the age of 10, Maugham was raised by a paternal uncle who was emotionally cold. Not wanting to become a lawyer like other men in his family, Maugham eventually trained and qualified as a doctor. The first run of his first novel, Liza of Lambeth (1897), sold out so rapidly that Maugham gave up medicine to write full-time. n During the First World War, he served with the Red Cross and in the ambulance corps, before being recruited in 1916 into the British Secret Intelligence Service, for which he worked in Switzerland and Russia before the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. During and after the war, he traveled in India and Southeast Asia; all of these experiences were reflected in later short stories and novels.

Charles Strickland无疑令人讨厌,但所有的欲加之罪以及对他产生的痛恨也好怜悯也好钦佩也好都是文明社会赋予个人的无形规则,其实他不过是活成了人类本身所固有的自私的样子,只是这种样子不再被虚饰的社会所接受罢了。讽刺的是,他死后,所谓的文明社会又开始争相收藏吹捧美化他的人生了。

的确是二流小说。
到底是誰在推崇這本書? 深櫃戀童老白男毛姆的厭女展露無遺。男人的故鄉就是一個他不需要工作、不需要勞作、不需要耕作,身邊有免費性發洩工具、免費保姆,不需要自己親自撫養後代,每天只需要讀讀書、畫點畫的地方嗎? Strickland當然不用撿六便士,因為有人給他送。放在那個年代的中國他得餓死。 到最後對於Strickland太太和兩個孩子的描述也讓我覺得迷惑。 提倡追求精神理想的書很多,沒必要看這本,更沒必要讚揚這本,因為夾帶了太多私貨(唯一可取之處或許就是第一人稱但第三視角的敘事角度)。 ps 毛姆很喜歡現代主義畫作?
很久之前看过中文版,没看下去。最近几年,全网对《月亮与六便士》的解读都是“满地的六便士,他却抬头看到了月亮”寓意为现实和理想的对照。但看原著的时候,我更多感觉到的是Strickland 对想要干的事情的执着, 他能在一边工作的时候,一边上补习班画画,在所有人觉得他画的稀巴烂的时候,他能一下子扎进一个岛上每天画画,挺励志。他不是相信自己多有天赋,感觉他坚信的是画画这件事,画出他觉得美的一切。死了以后,让Ata 再一把火烧掉,什么也不想留下,他专注的是自己吧!
