瓦尔帕莱索（Valparaiso）是这本书的书名，也是智利第二大城市，一座海港城市的名字。1957年，在完成环游世界的旅行过后，塞尔吉奥·拉莱和诗人聂鲁达一起，为瑞士摄影杂志《Du》拍摄专题，这次拍摄的主题就是瓦尔帕莱索这座城。拉莱在世的时候只出版过4本摄影书，这本《瓦尔帕莱索》是最著名的，也是拉莱投注个人感情最多的一本。首版的《瓦尔帕莱索》出版于1991年。目前的新版是根据拉莱当年亲自设计的手稿编辑制作的。首版书只收录有36张黑白照片，新版书照片总数达到了120张。
