What does persuasion mean - a firm belief, or the action of persuading someone to think something else? Anne Elliot is one of Austen's quietest heroines, but also one of the strongest and the most open to change. She lives at the time of the Napoleonic wars, a time of accident, adventure, the making of new fortunes and alliances. A woman of no importance, she manoeuvres in her restricted circumstances as her long-time love Captain Wentworth did in the wars. Even though she is nearly thirty, well past the sell-by bloom of youth, Austen makes her win out for herself and for others like herself, in a regenerated society.

  • "[S]o that Mrs Ramsay looked from one to the other and said, speaking to Prue in her own mind, You will be as happy as she is one of these days. You will be much happier, she added, because you are my daughter, she meant; her own daughter must be happier than other people's daughters."
  • "Of all the family, Mary was probably the one most immediately gratified by the circumstance. It was creditable to have a sister married, and she might flatter herself with having been greatly instrumental to the connexion . . . and as her own sisters must be better than her husband's sisters, it was"
  • "Mr. and Mrs. Dursley of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much."
  • "So they spoke, and the proud heart in me was persuaded"
  • "“I can listen no longer in silence. I must speak to you by such means as are within my reach. You pirece my soul. I am half agony, half hope. Tell me not that i am too late, that such precious feelings are gone for ever. I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own than when you almos"

We each begin probably with a little bias towards our own sex, and upon that bias build every circumstance in favour of it which has occurred within our own circle
The first novel written by English I've read,I was attracted by it' beautiful style of writing, piercing description on character.
