书籍介绍
This book enables STEMM researchers to write effective papers for publication as well as other research-related texts such as a doctoral thesis, technical report, or conference abstract. Science Research Writing uses a reverse-engineering approach to writing developed from extensive work with STEMM researchers at Imperial College London. This approach unpacks current models of STEMM research writing and helps writers to generate the writing tools needed to operate those models effectively in their own field. The reverse-engineering approach also ensures that writers develop future-proof strategies that will evolve alongside the coming changes in research communication platforms. The Second Edition has been extensively revised and updated to represent current practice and focuses on the writing needs of both early-stage doctoral STEMM researchers and experienced professional researchers at the highest level, whether or not they are native speakers of English. The book retains the practical, user-friendly format of the First Edition, and now contains seven units that deal separately with the components of written STEMM research communication: Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion, Abstract and Title, as well as extensive FAQ responses and a new Checklist and Tips section. Each unit analyses extracts from recent published STEMM journal papers to enable researchers to discover not only what to write, but, crucially, how to write it. The global nature of science research requires fast, accurate communication of highly complex information that can be understood by all participants. Like the First Edition, the Second Edition is intended as a fast, do-it-yourself guide to make both the process and the product of STEMM research writing more effective.

精彩摘录
  • "If you describe all your results in equal detail they will seem to have the same level of importance. This is unlikely to be the case: some of your results are probably more significant than others, some are typical, and some are key results whereas others may be of more peripheral interest. However"
  • "There are some grammar issues that are worth noting. When you use key words in constructing the title, be careful about creating complex compound nouns. The conciseness of a compound noun is very tempting for non-native writers and English has a high level of tolerance for such nouns, but make sure "
  • "Use of 'a' and 'the': Use THE if or when you and your reader both know which thing/person you mean. e.g. I had a cheese sandwich and an apple for lunch. The sandwich was fine but the apple had a worm in it. Use THE if there is only one possible referent. e.g. Government policy is committed to protec"
  • "The language you use to describe your results has as much power as the tables and graphs themselves, perhaps even more. Look at the two curves in the figure below:"
  • "When you comment on this figure, if you write As can be seen in the figure, the two curves are very similar, the reader will focus on the similarity between the curves, and they will therefore seem similar. However, if you write As can be seen in the figure, the two curves are noticeably different, "
  • "and you can use more than one in a sentence, depending on how ‘weak’ you want your claim to be — but be careful; if you add too many, the sentence may not mean very much at all: The evidence points to the possibility that in many cases, x can contribute to certain types of y."
  • "Make sure that you understand the difference between the explanation of a result (why it occurred as it did), the evaluation of a result (what the numbers mean) and the implication of a result (what the result suggests or implies)."
  • "Saying what your results are is the central function of the Results section; talking about what they mean is the central function of the Discussion."
