You've landed a job. Now what? No one tells you how to navigate your first day in a new role. No one tells you how to take ownership, manage expectations, or handle workplace politics. No one tells you how to get promoted. The answers to these professional unknowns lie in the unspoken rules—the certain ways of doing things that managers expect but don't explain and that top performers do but don't realize. The problem is, these rules aren't taught in school. Instead, they get passed down over dinner or from mentor to mentee, making for an unlevel playing field, with the insiders getting ahead and the outsiders stumbling along through trial and error. Until now. In this practical guide, Gorick Ng, a first-generation college student and Harvard career adviser, demystifies the unspoken rules of work. Ng distills the wisdom he has gathered from over five hundred interviews with professionals across industries and job types about the biggest mistakes people make at work. Loaded with frameworks, checklists, and talking points, the book provides concrete strategies you can apply immediately to your own situation and will help you navigate inevitable questions, such as: How do I manage my time in the face of conflicting priorities? How do I build relationships when I’m working remotely? How do I ask for help without looking incompetent or lazy? The Unspoken Rules is the only book you need to perform your best, stand out from your peers, and set yourself up for a fulfilling career.

  • "The key is to avoid overshooting or undershooting your zones of competence, commitment, and compatibility whenever you talk about yourself."
  • ""What's up?" actually meant "What are you working on?" and not the rhetorical "What's up?" that you might ask your friends."
  • "- Managing misunderstandings is all about understanding your intent and controlling your impact. - Make sure you show the appropriate amount of urgency and seriousness."
  • "Consider answering calls with "Hello, this is [your name]," asking "Is now still a good time?" when calling others, ending with "Bye," and waiting a second before hanging up. ... try coming up with your response as others are still speaking, while still listening to the other person. ... Consider pa"
  • "Do the thing you fear the most, and the death of fear is certain."
  • "More important is how you respond. Do you shrivel up like a wilting flower? Or, do you poke fun at yourself... One reaction makes people question your confidence. Another hints that you are self-aware enough to own up to your mistake - and mature enough to move on."
  • "So, instead of just asking your question, try going with the structure of “Here’s my question, and here’s why I’m asking this question.” Or, “Here’s what I know, and here’s what I don’t know.”"
  • "- What did [this person] mean by [this term or statement]? - What is the history of [this decision]? - How does [this process] work? - How does what [this person] said about [this topic] align with what [that person] said about [that topic]? - [This person] was an unfamiliar face/name. Who are they?"

有声书,值得入文字版供随时reflect and refer to. 沟通方面的潜规则是我需要恶补的短板,记录一些key take-aways: (1) be proactive and reach out to others. You never know when the connection will help! (2) learner (ask questions!) or leader (expected to contribute) mode. (3) Always be prepared to have a good comment or question before a meeting.
