从一个短篇（第一章，也是写作最密度最大的一章）扩充而来的外星殖民故事。围绕着人类与该星球的原生物种（一种智慧植物，竹子）的接触、认识、交流、共生展开。植物不会说话，和人类通过符号交流（题目由此得来，Semiosis最早是皮尔士的术语）。但交流的部分所占的比重并不高。而且说实话Burke描写的人类小社会（初始只有34人，在整本书100年的跨度里都没有占据整个星球）并不是特别有意思，叙事围绕着一个传统矛盾（开拓还是守成），人物的行为仿佛都已经退化了一样。技术的唯一的惊喜发生在第一次探索到智慧植物。惊异、恐惧、又带有点人类的自大。此外其他科技和故事之间的联系不大（我一直没明白从第一天起殖民者就用有了环球卫星，结果要花一代人的功夫才发现文明遗迹，还保密）。总之只是还行。
当世代的更迭和帕克斯人类的历史一同滚滚向前的时候，追求和平的初心就是他们最宝贵的地球遗产。这本书打动我的点太多了，我以为会是一个冷峻的乌托邦实验一样的故事，结果字里行间全是作者对和平、沟通、互相理解的热望。在帕克斯星试图重建的文明，也是当下这个自我孤立和互相猜忌的世界需要去重建的文明。这种书自带背景音乐We Are the World好吗。
