The 6th century historian here sets out to tell "what manner of persons Justinian and Theodora were and the method by which they ruined the Roman Empire"--in an account that he apparently meant to publish after their deaths. He tells of Theodora’s early years as a stage performer and prostitute; the duplicitous means and intrigue she employed to achieve her goals when in power; her cruelty and spite, vanity and pride. Not a fair and balanced picture perhaps, but a striking and vivid one.

Procopius, born at Caesarea in Palestine late in the 5th century, became a lawyer. In 527 CE he was made legal adviser and secretary of Belisarius, commander against the Persians, and went with Belisarius again in 533 against the Vandals and in 535 against the Ostrogoths. 整本书最真的话:“What I write here I did not see myself, but I heard it told by men who were positive that they had seen it.”······不过这本书我当作英文范本来学习英文写作的,还是给五星。
