作者简介
Lois Lowry is known for her versatility and invention as a writer. She was born in Hawaii and grew up in New York, Pennsylvania, and Japan. After several years at Brown University, she turned to her family and to writing. She is the author of more than thirty books for young adults, including the popular Anastasia Krupnik series. She has received countless honors, among them the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award, the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Award, the California Young Reader.s Medal, and the Mark Twain Award. She received Newbery Medals for two of her novels, NUMBER THE STARS and THE GIVER. Her first novel, A SUMMER TO DIE, was awarded the International Reading Association.s Children.s Book Award. Lowry now divides her time between Cambridge and an 1840s farmhouse in Maine.

其实前几天就紧赶慢赶看完了。我难得能看完一本英文原著，这本的确很适合我这种英语很弱的人。当人们选择了“Sameness”，代价是很大的，因为他们不再拥有选择。恐怖的是，人们觉得选择变成了一种负担。没有选择人们不以为意，以为自己很快乐，那么最先清醒的人也是最痛苦的。就像鲁迅笔下铁屋子里最先醒来的人，他应该怎么做呢？且不论这个世界的可行性，作者笔下的这个世界好神奇。无法想象一个没有色彩的世界。这个世界主要的交通工具是自行车，实行严格的人口控制，每天家人聚在一起讨论感觉，这是在影射什么吗？这部小说读得我好悲伤，虽然结局比较模糊，但是我忧伤地觉得主人公注定找不到elsewhere了。唯一能安慰我的，是他至少走出了那个世界，来到了更广阔的天地，感受到了更多的东西。
初读以为是童年版《成长的烦恼》，后来才发现是一个反乌托邦的寓言，看完还是半懂不懂的。

很久没读过fiction了。开始读的第一个感觉是：对我来说作者试图构建的世界缺乏足够的复杂度，苍白浅薄，已经超出基于小说题材可以认同的范围。作者自己肯定也明白，从中间到后半部分都集中精力于修一座软绵绵的高塔。这本书评价这么高的原因，是不是好多容易满足的人觉得只有这座软塔比较重要呢？许多地方以留白的名义含糊过去便罢了，一些细节只是作者某一思绪的具象化，离人/世界的实际脉理太远，笔下又缺乏足够的力量来把它们填得丰满入心。既不是那种自繁入简的文笔，又不是童话。最后的结果是：你的意思我是明白的，可是表达的效果并不好。Giver做的事情，让我想起异域镇魂曲里的公共感应室。突然非常想念这个游戏，那里面说话和表达的方式要聪明得多。当然，这么久没读过fiction，也许是我变得太苛刻了。

He is to be trained to become the "Receiver of Memory." You see, in the Utopian society Lowry has created for us, the people don't want to be burdened with memories. However, they also don't want to make decisions or changes which, in the past, have led to disaster so they have assigned one person to keep all the memories of history.
小时候muffys课上读的。当时无忧无虑地坐在洒满阳光的教室里，和一群好朋友，也不知道究竟读懂了什么没有。不过有一点印象很深，这本书是我第一次萌生出对于生命意义的思考，和对于理想世界应该是什么样子的描摹。
七年级英文课必读书，印象中很好看
