扣一颗星是因为本书的结构较为松散，每章主体部分引经据典、漫无边际，到了结尾匆匆给出宽泛建议。既然是讲write short，必然避不开lexicology，这正中我下怀，我前几天刚问霍sir词汇学这门课除了培养学者之外有什么作用和意义，他不知如何作答，本书给了一个思路：词源学可以帮助写作（如Chap.17 Vary Hard and Soft Words），写作可以促进沟通，从而提升生活质量。
由于对英文写作“简短有力”的要求有了新的认识，因此在书店被这本书的标题所吸引。这本书分为两个部分：How to Write Short和How to Write Short with a Purpose. 每一部分下内含十几个小章节讲述具体的写作技巧。每一节最后会有要点回顾和小写作练习。先读过On Writing Well之后再来看这本书，感觉从某种角度来讲是前一本书写作技巧的具体延伸。
