Isherwood的第一部小说，按他自己话说是深受普鲁斯特影响，总之非常不isherwood，读起来也很费力……但是其中已经依稀可见他日后的风格了。
Isherwood 21岁时的第一本小说，已经带着浓浓的个人风格，主人公Phil和Allen稍显刻薄却很有魅力。看的是校图书馆里1957年再版，年长的Isherwood给年轻的自己写了篇客观有趣的序。
读起来是有点费劲的，不知道是什么原因感觉句子或者语篇窜来窜去的，不太清晰，而且展现的老一代与新一代的矛盾不算突出，前边篇幅过长铺垫让人有点兴趣全无，可能也是这样就只能记住Philip不小心听到Joan和他妈妈的对话那里的情景了。
