Dance of the Happy Shades

Alice Munro is my anchor amidst turbulent times. I always expand my imagination of women’s life and of the relationships between them every time I read a new Munro .

十五个小故事。很多次女主都叫Helen Louise（而且只有一次，在Thanks for the ride 中叙述者是男生），又由于这些故事似乎都发生在一个叫Tuppertown的小地方，阅读过程中我不禁将它视作作者的童年记事——啊，那时候那些人那样活：细微细腻纠结的情绪，肮脏阴暗破败的环境，地方小得像中国的熟人社会……看到养银狐喂马肉那个故事时，我想起汪曾祺自选集里的小说，也是留下一份过去人们的独特性存在记忆。看英语原版时，因为个别段落有点不确定，参阅了两个译林出版社的中译本，感觉2018年李玉瑶译版明显较好。

Reading Alice Munro again after about a year, and thinking about it, I probably prefer the style of her epiphanies to the content of her writing.

小说集标题是源自蒙特威尔第的歌剧，Danse des ombres heureuses在《奥菲欧》里一般英译为Dance of the Blessed Spirits，门罗直译成“happy shades”虽说有悖原典的语境，却是很贴合她的小镇观察中阴影一般不起眼的个体们。似乎很多读者说她“抗议情节”“反故事”，我觉得门罗只是不去刻意搭建情节曲线而已，她写的更像是情节折线，没有铺垫、直接突转、骤然落幕。她终究是忠于生活的，生活本就是一触即碎的，没有这许多弧度与张力。

Munro的文字似乎有种魔力，可以把日常事情中特别是人际关系间的细微情感表达的淋漓尽致，有时候乍一看会觉得这是什么奇奇怪怪的形容和表达，但细想一番竟会表达的如此贴切。上好的作家=上好的嘴替，她用她的文字带我领略了一番我自己无法梳理表达清楚的复杂情绪
