Presents the science of ekistics for systematic analysis of historical, contemporary, and proposed human settlements varying from individual to Ecumenopolis size. Five principles are described as applicable to all cities and applied to growing urban developments. Isolation of Dimensions and Elimination of Alternatives (IDEA method) is proposed for future planning and correction of problems in large metropolitan areas.

比较惊讶的点有三，也是吴良镛的书中没有过滤出来的。1）生物比喻无处不在，城市是不健康的，规划是Prescription, 规范是Therapy, 研究是Diagnosis。2.系统理论和控制论的影响深入骨髓。 基本上城市现象都是通过data sheets来认知和预测的。设计就是将data sheets变成形式。3）大尺度的先锋和小尺度的保守。主要的矛盾不是阶级/种族/性别之间的矛盾，而是尺度之间的矛盾。
要系统了解人类聚居学，或者中国学界的人居环境学，读这本书是一定没错的。但是我又一个问题没有搞明白，为什么ekistics后来式微了？ 我猜测因为需要的跨学科配合太多，表格工作法并不是任何一个学科的本体输出，所以很难在学界推行？
